Ladies, Yahweh is just amazing. He is awesome. He is like the husband who likes to come home with a huge bouquet of roses when the day is rough or things are grey, just because. Our Abba gave me an amazing gift today when He reminded me of His Sovereignty, in a way I never possibly expected, and it is my deepest pleasure to share it with you!
God’s Timing is Always Perfect!
Several months ago I relayed the fact that we were beginning a season of transition from military life to civilian life (see here and, more recently, here), which meant that my husband would be unemployed for a time. Yes, he is still unemployed, as of yet, and yes, we are still in the midst of the process of moving into the RV (AWESOME!…see post here).
Today, though, I was sideswiped by Yahweh’s unexpected hand of grace upon our family. Here’s the whole story:
Rewind time with me back to 2003/2004 when I was still an active duty petty officer in the Navy, newly married to my awesome husband and our first baby not yet a thought in our heads. We were asked by the military educational benefits personnel if we wanted to contribute something called a “Kicker” to our GI Bills to boost the monthly amount a bit and add to our overall benefits. My husband and I were all too excited to boost our GI Bill, even if it meant contributing a few hundred dollars from our pockets to do it. We paid the money, signed the paperwork, and believed we had just solidly invested in our educational futures.
Fast forward about 3-4 years when I actually began using my GI Bill for college tuition and I came to learn that there was no record of either me or my husband paying the “Kicker,” and therefore we would not be receiving the monthly boost to our GI Bill that we had been promised.
Needless to say, both my husband and I were not happy (code for disgruntled and livid). Over the course of the next few years I repeatedly brought this issue up during discussions with VA reps, but to no avail. There was no record of it at all.
Two days ago, my husband, who has been clearing out our filing cabinet and scanning ALL the documents (GULP) to reduce our paper clutter, came across an old LES (i.e. military pay stub) for me which showed a deduction for the “Kicker”, which meant that we now had a paper trail we could use to show the VA that, yes, we had indeed paid for this benefit. Of course, when and how to get this whole fix moving we had no idea.
Now, this morning, out of the blue, I noticed a large deposit put into our checking account (I am alerted to these through a finance app, and it definitely caught my interest because, hello, we have zero income right now, for the most part). The amount was significant and I had no rhyme or reason for it, and when I looked it up on our bank’s website, I saw it came from VA Educational Benefits. So, I called the VA.
Well, guess what? The VA had somehow come across documentation showing that we had indeed paid the “Kicker” and they reimbursed me for about 24 months of retroactive pay! The amount of the “Kicker” bonus x 24…totally amazing.
God Steps In When It Is Best
I want to try to explain this in the depth that it needs to be. You see, God had His hand all over this the WHOLE time…I have no doubt about it. I never thought about it before this event happened…I never would have credited Him for withholding a benefit for a “rainy day,” but this is precisely what He did.
Ladies, had Yahweh given us this money at the time it should have been ours, we would have likely spent it on dinners out or another X, Y, Z contraption which we are now selling to the highest bidder (or donating for nothing!) We would have squandered the blessing. And the whole time, we were grumbling about our “plight” instead of trusting in Him and His purpose.
Yahweh provided that money during a time when we are living as carefully as we can, trying to obey Him as closely as possible where He leads, and honestly nervous about expenses and costs as they incur. We trust Him, but it is still easy to become a little overwhelmed here and there and scared when all you can see are the finances reducing. He just showed us, again, who is really in control.
You know what else? We have been working to get our trailer set up with a composting toilet and solar panels to help reduce our dependency on the grid, so that, if needed, boondocking or dry camping would be more easily feasible. This reimbursement completely replenished the money we have spent in faith, following after Him. How great is our God?
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” ~ 1 Thess. 5: 16-18
Choose Praise, Not Complaint, Always
Ladies, no matter what difficulty you are facing, turn it over to our Abba…He is already in charge of it anyway. Take your thoughts captive and focus your mind on the Truth, which is that our Abba LOVES us and is watching out for us in ways we cannot even begin to imagine.
If there are things that seem to not be “going your way,” praise Him. He may be setting up your rainy day fund for a time you cannot see coming. We can choose joy and praise, because that is the root of faith:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” ~ Hebrews 11:1
Be at peace, friends…choose faith.
Let’s start the conversation! Has Yahweh ever provided in an unexpected way during a time of need? How are you doing with trusting Him with the frustrations that pop up in your life?
